Open water swimming started way back with Captain Webb being the first person to swim the English Channel way back in 1875. It was first included in the Olympic Games in 1896 and was finally recognised by Fina in 1986.
Rykneld swimming club itself has a long history going right back to the start of the club when founder member Dr David Hunt’s daughters Carol and Sarah became the first twins to swim across the English Channel on the 6th August 1988 in a time of 9 hours 29 minutes at the age of 26. They were inducted as honour swimmers in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame in 1994.
In 1987 Rykneld swimmers entered a Channel relay team who completed the swim in 9 hours 21 minutes. Team members included Carol, Douglas and Sarah Hunt, Charles and Alex Harper and our Club Chairman Paul Hopkinson
Over the following years a number of Rykneld swimmers have achieved success in competitions at various levels.
For more information contact Gwen Huddart at the club or committee members who will try to help. The following pages show recent success and links for further information.
